Industrial Drying & Evaporator Technology Whitepaper

Thermodynamic Optimization, Global Compliance, and System Integration in Process Engineering

1. Industrial Drying and Concentration Trends

The global process manufacturing sector is undergoing an unprecedented shift toward decarbonization, process automation, and thermal efficiency. Drying and concentration are energy-intensive unit operations. Industrial players are facing strict regulations on greenhouse gas emissions and rising energy prices, which has accelerated the transition from traditional, direct-fired steam processes to integrated energy-recovery systems.

Modern plants prioritize solutions that utilize low-grade waste heat, mechanical vapor recompression (MVR), and advanced control loops. High-speed airflow drying systems, falling film evaporators, and tube bundle dryers must now provide high performance with minimal environmental impact. Our commitment as a CE-certified manufacturer is to bridge the gap between heavy thermodynamic loads and low energy consumption, ensuring that our systems deliver high productivity while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

Electrification & MVR

Mechanical Vapor Recompression replaces traditional boiler steam by compressing and recycling process vapors, achieving up to 90% energy savings compared to single-effect evaporators.

Thermal Integration

Leveraging waste heat from dryers to preheat evaporation feed liquids decreases total plant fuel requirements and optimizes the primary energy consumption index.

Stringent Safety Codes

Global operations mandate adherence to international standards. Explosion-proof designs (ATEX/IECEx) and pressure vessel codes (ASME U-stamp, CE-PED) are non-negotiable.

2. Procurement Requirements: What Global Engineering Teams Seek

International procurement departments face complex challenges when choosing equipment manufacturers. They look for suppliers who can manage the entire process, including initial thermodynamic modeling, mechanical manufacturing, and global shipping logistics. These projects require a clear technical roadmap that ensures high efficiency, ease of operation, and long-term durability under harsh operational conditions.

  • Material Quality & Corrosion Prevention: Industrial slurries, organic starches, and wastewater concentrates often contain abrasive elements or corrosive organic compounds. Using high-grade stainless steels (SS304, SS316L, duplex steels) with precision weld polishing is essential to avoid stress corrosion cracking and pitting.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Standards: Manufacturers must provide certified evidence of compliance, such as CE marks for the European Economic Area, ASME stamps for the Americas, and ISO certifications for global operational frameworks. These certifications verify that design calculation books, non-destructive testing (NDT), and pressure testing conform to international safety standards.
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Optimization: Beyond the initial purchase price, the true cost of an evaporator or dryer is determined by its operational expenses. Purchasing teams focus on metrics like steam consumption per kilogram of water evaporated, electrical load requirements, maintenance intervals, and the availability of replacement parts.

3. Technical Roadmap and Regulatory Alignment

Jiangsu Zongheng operates with a clear commitment to technical quality and international compliance. Pressure vessels are critical process components that require careful design, structural testing, and certified safety parameters. Our engineering department uses advanced software to perform finite element analysis (FEA) and thermodynamic calculations, ensuring that our systems deliver reliable service over decades of operation.

Our regulatory roadmap ensures that all machinery exported to Europe and global markets meets local standards:

  • CE Marking and PED (Pressure Equipment Directive): The Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) regulates the design, manufacturing, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment. Our evaporators and dryers comply with these standards, ensuring they can be safely operated throughout the EU.
  • ASME Code Stamp U: The ASME Section VIII Division 1 Code rules are followed for our pressure vessels. This covers material selection, design rules, non-destructive examinations (RT, UT, PT, MT), and hydrostatic pressure testing.
  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality System: Our quality assurance processes manage the entire lifecycle of our projects—from incoming raw plate inspection and welder qualification records to final system commissioning.

4. Localized Technical Support & Installation Services

For large-scale process plant engineering, the equipment delivery is just the first step. Jiangsu Zongheng provides comprehensive services from installation supervision and mechanical assembly guidance to hot commissioning and operator training. We collaborate with local engineering companies globally to ensure quick access to spare parts, rapid maintenance, and on-site support. Our engineers can travel to customer facilities to assist during critical startup phases, helping to optimize system performance and ensure long-term operational success.

Technical FAQ

Key information regarding compliance, efficiency, and engineering parameters

What standards apply to CE-certified industrial drying and evaporation equipment?

Pressure components must comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU. Electrical systems, controls, and rotating elements are certified under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU. Our systems are built and tested to meet all of these European directives, ensuring safe operation and compliance.

How does an MVR evaporator reduce operational energy consumption?

Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) utilizes a centrifugal compressor or blower to raise the pressure and temperature of the vapor generated in the evaporator. The compressed vapor is then recycled to heat the same effect, which significantly reduces the need for primary steam. The main energy input is electricity for the compressor, resulting in up to 90% energy savings compared to single-effect steam systems.

Can Jiangsu Zongheng design and manufacture equipment under the ASME Code?

Yes. Jiangsu Zongheng received the ASME U-Stamp authorization in 2012. We design and manufacture Category III medium and low-pressure vessels in strict compliance with ASME Section VIII Division 1 guidelines, utilizing qualified welders and certified materials.

What materials are used for processing corrosive or abrasive starches?

We construct our starch washing cyclones, degerming mills, and dryer piping from premium stainless steel grades such as SS304 and SS316L. Where high wear and corrosion resistance are needed, we use duplex stainless steels (such as 2205) and apply surface hardening treatments to extend the service life of critical parts.

How is feed liquid distribution controlled in your falling film evaporators?

Our falling film evaporators use custom-designed liquid distribution plates situated at the top of the tube bundle. This setup ensures that the feed liquid is distributed evenly as a uniform film down the inner tube walls, avoiding dry spots, minimizing fouling, and maintaining high heat transfer rates.
