Barcelona’s Industrial Renaissance: Decarbonization and Resource Recovery

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and the wider Catalonia region constitute one of Southern Europe’s most critical industrial hubs. With prominent sectors spanning chemical synthesis, pharmaceuticals, food processing (especially in the Lleida and Girona sub-regions), and heavy metallurgy, the demand for high-performance evaporation technology has intensified. Catalan industries are facing double pressures: complying with the strict environmental mandates of the Catalan Water Agency (Agència Catalana de l'Aigua - ACA) and meeting Europe's ambitious 2050 carbon neutrality targets.

Industrial evaporators are no longer viewed merely as process tools; they are the heart of energy decarbonization and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems. By employing advanced mechanical vapor recompression and waste heat utilization frameworks, manufacturers in Barcelona can convert complex wastewater streams into clean, reusable condensate while recovering valuable by-products (such as salts, organic raw materials, and proteins) that were previously discarded.

OPEX Reduction

MVR reduces steam consumption by re-compressing the secondary vapor, saving up to 80% operating cost compared to multi-effect designs.

ZLD Optimization

Conforms to EU green deal directives for water circularity, recovering over 95% of purified process water for factory reuse.

Corrosion Protection

Utilization of duplex steel, Titanium Grade 2, and Hastelloy materials prevents mechanical failure under extreme chloride and acidic conditions.

Catalonia's Regulatory Landscape & Water Security

Spain, particularly Catalonia, has experienced severe drought challenges, making water scarcity a top-tier operational risk for chemical and manufacturing plants. Regulatory authorities have placed strict limits on industrial discharges into the municipal sewage grid and natural water basins. Evaporation systems developed by Jiangsu Zongheng Concentrating and Drying Equipment Co., Ltd. address this regional pain point directly. Our technologies help factories close their water cycles, eliminating liquid waste output and ensuring uninterrupted operation even during regional water restriction events.

Custom Thermodynamic Design and Technical Solutions

Designing an evaporator system requires a precise understanding of the feed liquid’s boiling point elevation (BPE), viscosity changes, and fouling tendencies. Standard, out-of-the-box machinery cannot withstand the volatile parameters of chemical processing. As an engineering-first manufacturer, our design philosophy incorporates rigorous laboratory analysis of the raw liquid before determining the technology route.

  • MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression)

Uses a centrifugal fan or turbo compressor to increase the energy level of the evaporated vapor, returning it to the heating chamber to eliminate the need for fresh boiler steam.

  • Falling Film Separation

Ideal for thermal-sensitive chemical compounds, offering thin-film downward distribution inside vertical tubes, maintaining low hold-up times and dynamic heat transfer coefficients.

  • Forced Circulation Crystallizer

Combines a recirculation pump, vertical/horizontal heat exchanger, and separator to drive fast-velocity liquid flows, allowing high-salinity solutions to reach saturation without scaling the tubes.

  • Waste Heat Multiple-Effect Evaporators

Captures low-temperature flashing steam from dry-cooling, venting systems, or furnace exhaust, routing it through successive negative-pressure effects to maximize energy efficiency.

Thermal Performance Matrix: Comparing Evaporator Modalities

Choosing the correct evaporator is an optimization challenge. Below is a high-level comparison matrix designed by our senior process engineers to assist global purchasing managers in matching technologies to specific plant requirements:

Evaporator Type Steam Consumption per Ton Water Electricity Input (per Ton Water) Best Applications Fouling Sensitivity
MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression) 0 to 0.05 Tons 15 - 28 kWh Starch, Waste Salt, Wastewater Concentration Medium
Triple-Effect Falling Film 0.35 - 0.40 Tons 3 - 6 kWh Juice, Dairy, Pharmaceutical Raw Materials High
Forced Circulation Crystallizer 0.28 - 0.33 Tons (with thermal vapors) 18 - 35 kWh Industrial Effluent Zero-Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Very Low
Waste Heat Multi-Effect Utilizes flash vapors (0 fresh steam) 5 - 10 kWh Corn steep liquor, Alcohol distillery vinasse Medium

Localization Support and European Safety Compliance

Purchasing heavy machinery for deployment in the European Union requires absolute compliance with harmonized directives. At Jiangsu Zongheng, we design our heat exchangers and pressure vessels in strict accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU and the ASME Code (Section VIII Division 1). We carry the prestigious ASME "U" stamp authorization, verifying that our welding, testing, and quality control systems are compliant with international standards.

For chemical and petrochemical applications in the Tarragona and Barcelona industrial corridors, explosive vapor hazards are often a major factor. Our systems can be fully integrated with ATEX-compliant instruments, explosion-proof motors, and safety systems, ensuring secure operation under Zone 1 or Zone 2 classifications.

Technical FAQ: Industrial Evaporator Engineering & Procurement

Expert answers addressing the key design factors, cost considerations, and maintenance protocols of industrial evaporation plants.

What are the key design factors when selecting between MVR and Multi-Effect Evaporators? +
The decision is driven by utility availability and operational expenditures. MVR systems utilize electricity to drive a compressor, which recycle vapors to eliminate the need for fresh boiler steam. This reduces energy consumption by up to 90%. However, if your facility has low-cost waste steam or low-pressure boiler capacity, a multi-effect falling film or forced circulation system may be more appropriate due to its lower initial capital investment.
How does Jiangsu Zongheng prevent scaling and fouling in high-salinity chemical wastewater? +
To prevent scaling, we use forced circulation crystallizers. By maintaining a high velocity (typically 2 to 3 m/s) inside the heat transfer tubes, we prevent crystallization from initiating on the tube walls. Crystallization occurs only in the separator vessel. Additionally, we optimize tube design, use electropolished finishes, and design custom Chemical Cleaning (CIP) cycles to maintain high thermal efficiency.
What metallurgy options do you offer for processing corrosive solutions? +
We select metallurgy based on operating temperature, pH, and chloride content. Options include Austenitic Stainless Steels (304, 316L) for light organic processing, Duplex and Super Duplex Steels (2205, 2507) for high-chloride solutions, and premium Alloys like Titanium (Gr. 2) or Hastelloy (C-276) for extremely acidic or high-chloride environments common in waste treatment.
Does your equipment comply with EU environmental and pressure vessel regulations? +
Yes. All pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and systems destined for Europe are built in compliance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. We are also ASME "U" stamp certified, which guarantees our adherence to strict design, raw material testing, welding, and hydrostatic examination guidelines.
What information is needed to get a detailed technical proposal? +
Please provide: (1) Liquid feed composition, concentration, pH, and density; (2) Required treatment capacity (kg/hr feed or water evaporation); (3) Target concentration or crystallization percentage; (4) Available utility capacities (steam pressure, electrical power, cooling water temperature); and (5) Specific materials of construction requirements.
